Mill Finishes on Stainless Steel Sheets and Plates

Mill Finishes on Stainless Steel Sheets and Plates

Mill finishes refer to the surface condition of stainless steel products after they have undergone rolling processes, either hot-rolled or cold-rolled. These finishes are widely used in various industries, including construction, and serve as the base layer for additional surface treatments.

Mill finishes are particularly important for architectural applications where aesthetics, corrosion resistance, and surface texture play key roles. Common mill finishes used in architecture include 1D, 2D, 2B, and 2R.

The Role of Pickling in Corrosion Resistance

To enhance the corrosion resistance of stainless steel mill finishes, the surfaces are often subjected to a pickling process. Pickling involves cleaning the surface with acid to remove the oxide scales formed during hot rolling and annealing. This step is crucial for ensuring that the steel can withstand harsh environments and maintain its structural integrity over time.

1D Finish

The 1D finish is a hot-rolled, annealed, and pickled surface typically seen in thicker sheets and plates. This finish has a rough texture with low reflectivity, making it less visually appealing but highly durable. As a result, 1D is often used in applications where the surface will not be visible, such as in structural components, or in situations where aesthetic appearance is not critical, like in industrial settings.

2D Finish

The 2D finish is produced through cold rolling, heat treatment, and pickling. This surface is smoother and more refined than 1D but remains non-reflective and matte in appearance. Due to its improved smoothness, the 2D finish is suitable for industrial and engineering applications but is rarely used for decorative purposes in architecture.

2B Finish

The 2B finish is similar to the 2D finish but includes an additional light cold-rolling step with polished rollers, which gives the surface a slightly reflective appearance. This finish is the most widely used surface finish in the stainless steel industry due to its balance between durability and appearance. It is commonly employed in general-purpose applications, as well as in architectural projects where a subtle shine is desired but full reflectivity is not necessary.

2R Finish (Bright Annealed)

The 2R finish, or bright annealed finish, is achieved by annealing the steel in a controlled atmosphere free of oxygen, followed by polishing with rollers. This process produces a highly reflective surface with clear image reflection properties. The 2R finish is extremely smooth, making it resistant to moisture and airborne contaminants. This finish is easy to clean, making it ideal for applications requiring a high level of hygiene, such as kitchen equipment, medical devices, and architectural cladding where a polished, high-end aesthetic is desired.

Applications of Mill Finishes in Architecture and Industry

Mill finishes serve a foundational role in stainless steel applications across industries. For architectural uses, mill finishes are often the starting point for further surface treatments such as polishing or coating, depending on the visual or functional requirements. In industrial applications, where durability and corrosion resistance are more critical than aesthetics, mill finishes are often used without additional treatments.

Understanding the different types of mill finishes and their appropriate applications is crucial for selecting the right material for specific projects. Each finish offers a unique combination of texture, reflectivity, and corrosion resistance, which makes stainless steel a versatile material across various sectors.
